Gordon Brown Leadership Award

The Gordon Brown

Christian Leadership Award

This award is presented annually to honor a coach who undeniably exhibits exceptional levels of Christian leadership to enact positive improvement of their environment/community and bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those around them. The purpose of this award is to recognize two things: 1) the commitment a coach has to improving their environment with Christian influence through their significance as a leader within the community and 2) the unabashed and loving work of shepherding others to Christ.

Background:

This award is in honor of the memory of Gordon Brown – an influential coach in Texas who impacted the lives of thousands while steadfastly working to build the Kingdom through coaching. Coach Brown was most notably known for being the first head football coach to lead Katy High School to their first state championship in 1959, offensive coordinator at Stephen F. Austin University, head coach, athletic director, and assistant superintendent for Nacogdoches ISD, quarter back (3-year letterman) for Sam Houston State University, long time supporter of FCA at the high school and collegiate levels, and other influential roles in coaching and education in Texas.

Coach Brown was remembered as a man with a ‘quiet strength’ who exuded an aura of command and respect (and if you were paying attention a quick wit as well!). Regardless of his personal success in coaching and administration (or struggles), Coach Brown was laser focused on his mission and role in education/coaching. “At the end of the day, I’ve found that what really matters is sharing Christ with those around you (your players, coaches, administrators, parents, etc). If you do that, not only do I truly believe you will end up building a more productive/winning program but you will also accomplish the most important mission of all: bringing as many as possible to have a personal relationship with their Lord and Savior.” (Paraphrased; speech given circa 2015 to Frisco ISD coaches workshop).
